Das National Theatre ist ein in London ansässiges Theater. Es liegt an der Waterloo Bridge direkt an der Themse im renovierten Teil von Bankside am Thames Foot Path.

Das Theater ist in der zweiten Hälfte der 1970er Jahre eröffnet worden und verkörpert in seinem Baustil die typische Beton-Bauweise (Sichtbeton) dieses Jahrzehnts. Diese war Gegenstand öffentlicher Diskussionen, so meinte Prinz Charles, dass das Gebäude einem Atomkraftwerk gleichkomme, es wurde von der Londoner Bevölkerung sowohl unter die 10 beliebtesten als auch unter die 10 meistgehassten Gebäude in London gewählt. Es besteht aus drei Theatern:

  • Dem „Lyttleton“ (klassische Frontalbühne),
  • dem „Olivier“, (halbrunde Form nach dem Vorbild des griechischen Amphitheaters) und
  • dem „Cottesloe“: Ein relativ kleiner Saal nach dem Vorbild eines Mittelalterlichen Herbergs-Innenhofes (das damalige Theater der Landbevölkerung); hier wird das experimentelle Theater auch durch die große Variabilität (keine feste Bestuhlung) betont.

Der erste Direktor des Theaters war Laurence Olivier, nach dem auch das größte der drei Theater, das „Olivier“ mit 1200 Sitzen, benannt wurde. Aktueller Direktor ist Nicholas Hytner. Das National Theatre wird zu ca. 40% von der Regierung subventioniert, die restlichen 60% kommen aus Spenden und dem Theaterbetrieb.

Das National Theatre ist das einzige Theater in London, das über ein Repertoire verfügt, d.h. alle fünf Tage wechseln die Stücke und wiederholen sich nach zwei Wochen, so dass insgesamt über 25 Produktionen in der Saison laufen. Im Sommer finden auf dem Vorplatz kostenlose Events, wie Theaterstücke, Lounges, Zirkus etc. statt. Kennzeichen ist der Flytower, der über der Olivier-Bühne in die Luft ragt und auf den oft Fotos projiziert werden.

Bizarres

Die meisten der Zugangstüren für Zuschauer bestehen aus Glas in extrem schmalen Edelstahlrahmen. Da in diesen kein Platz für Schlösser war, wird das Gebäude nachts mit Fahrradschlössern (zwischen den Türgriffen) verschlossen.
