Es ist der Hauptbestandteil des Cabreuvaöls.
Nerolidol besitzt ein Chiralitätszentrum und liegt als cis-trans-Gemisch vor. Nerolidol ist ein Isomer des Farnesol. Beide Alkohole enthalten drei Doppelbindungen, wobei sich Nerolidol vom Farnesol durch die Stellung einer Doppelbindung und der OH-Gruppe unterscheidet.
Nerolidol kommt in Neroli, Ingwer, Jasmin, Lavendel, Teebaum und Zitronengras vor und ist Bestandteil vieler etherischer Öle, z. B. Perubalsamöl und Cabreuvaöl. Das Aroma von Nerolidol ist holzig und erinnert an frische Baumrinde. Es findet Verwendung als Aromastoff und Duftstoff.
