Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (* 10. Juli 1943 in Richmond, Virginia; † 6. Februar 1993 in New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Tennisspieler.

Leben

Ashe war der erste dunkelhäutige Tennisspieler, der für das Daviscup-Team der USA nominiert wurde. Im Jahr 1968 gewann er die US Open und außerdem mit dem amerikanischen Team den Daviscup. 1970 folgte der nächste Sieg bei einem Grand Slam-Turnier: Ashe gewann die Australian Open. 1975 errang er dann den größten Erfolg seiner Karriere, als er in Wimbledon im Finale überraschend Jimmy Connors besiegte. 1978 verlor er das Masters-Finale gegen John McEnroe. 1980 folgte dann der Rücktritt als Tennisspieler. In späteren Jahren war er dann als Co-Kommentator unter anderem für ABC Sports tätig und war auch einige Jahre Kapitän des amerikanischen Daviscup-Teams. 1985 wurde er in die International Tennis Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

1988 erkrankte er an Aids, weil er anlässlich einer Herzoperation eine HIV-kontaminierte Blutkonserve erhalten hatte. Fünf Jahre später starb Arthur Ashe an der Krankheit.

Nach seinem Tod wurde das Hauptstadion in Flushing Meadows nach ihm benannt und in seinem Geburtsort wurde eine Statue in der Monument Avenue errichtet.

Am 20. Juni 1993 erhielt Ashe posthum die Presidential Medal of Freedom.
