Ashram (englische Schreibweise, dt. laut Duden der Aschram, Sanskrit, m.n., आश्रम, āśrama), bezeichnet in den indischen Sprachen ein klosterähnliches Meditationszentrum. Die Bedeutung des Wortes ist „Ort der Anstrengung“.

Damit hängt der Begriff der vier Lebensstadien im Hinduismus zusammen, den Ashramas. Diese sind: der Brahmacarin (Schüler), der Grihastha (Haushalter), der Vanaprastha (sich in die Waldeinsamkeit Zurückziehender) und der Sannyasin (die Erleuchtung Suchender). Der Ort der dritten Lebensstufe, die Walderemitage, in die sich der Familienvater mit seiner Frau zurückzog, um sich durch Studium und Meditation auf die Erlösung moksha (die Einheit mit Gott und die Befreiung vom Kreislauf der Wiedergeburten Samsara) vorzubereiten, erhielt die Bezeichnung Ashram.

Den spirituellen Leiter und Führer eines Ashrams nennt man Guru. Daneben gibt es noch andere „Hauptamtliche“, die Yogis, die Vorträge halten, Bhajans singen, Mantras rezitieren und Gebete sprechen.
