Aufnahme mehrerer Osteoblasten. In der TEM-Aufnahme ist das von den Osteoblasten synthetisierte Osteoid als helle, zur mineralisierten Knochenmatrix hin scharf abgegrenzten Zone (schwarze Grenzlinie) mit zwei eingelagerten Osteozyten gut zu erkennen.
Osteoblasten (Singular der Osteoblast) sind Zellen, die für die Knochenbildung verantwortlich sind. Sie entwickeln sich aus undifferenzierten Mesenchymzellen, embryonalen Bindegewebszellen. Sie lagern sich an Knochen hautschichtartig an und bilden indirekt die Grundlage für neue Knochensubstanz, die Knochenmatrix, indem sie vor allem Typ-1-Kollagen, Calciumphosphate und -carbonate in den interstitiellen Raum ausscheiden. Bei diesem Prozess verändern sie sich zu einem Gerüst aus nicht mehr teilungsfähigen Osteozyten, das langsam mineralisiert und mit Calcium aufgefüllt wird. Diese Osteozyten bilden ein Netzwerk, das in den neugebildeten Knochen eingelagert wird.
Gegenspieler der Osteoblasten sind die Osteoklasten.
Entartete Osteoblasten können Osteoblastome, eine Art von Knochentumoren verursachen.
