Paul Cadmus (* 17. Dezember 1904 in New York City; † 12. Dezember 1999 in Weston, Connecticut) war ein US-amerikanischer Maler.

Leben und Wirken

Er wurde durch Malereien und Zeichnungen von nackten männlichen Figuren bekannt. Seine Werke kombinieren Elemente der Erotik und der Sozialkritik, um einen (als Stil bezeichneten) Magischen Realismus zu erreichen. Cadmus benutzte für seine Gemälde die schwierige Eitempera-Technik. Im Jahr 1934 malte Cadmus The Fleet's In!, während er für Public Works of Art Project von der WPA arbeitete. Dieses Gemälde, das Seeleute, Frauen und ein homosexuelles Paar zeigt, führte in der Öffentlichkeit zu einem Aufschrei der Entrüstung und wurde aus der Ausstellung der Corcoran Gallery of Art entfernt. Doch diese öffentlich Empörung verhalf seiner Karriere zu einem Sprung nach vorn. Er lebte über 35 Jahre mit seinem Lebensgefährten Jon Anderson, der Motiv vieler seiner Werke wurde, zusammen, er verstarb 1999, fünf Tage vor seinem 95. Geburtstag in seinem Haus in Weston, Connecticut.
