Die atomare Masseneinheit (Einheitenzeichen: u (unified atomic mass unit), veraltet amu (atomic mass unit)), ist eine Einheit der Masse. Sie wird bei der Angabe von Atom- und Molekülmassen verwendet.

Im anglo-amerikanischen Raum und in der Biochemie wird die Einheit Dalton (bzw. Kilodalton, kDa) anstatt der atomaren Masseneinheit benutzt, wobei gilt 1 u = 1 Da.

Da der Kern des 12C-Atoms 12 Nukleonen enthält, ist die Einheit u annähernd gleich der Masse eines Nukleons.

Wert vor 1960

1/16 der Masse des Sauerstoff-Atoms.

Die Differenz zwischen chemischer (bezogen auf das natürliche Isotopenverhältnis von Sauerstoff) und physikalischer (bezogen auf 16O) Definition führte zur heutigen, vereinheitlichten Definition. Die alten Definitionen führen zu leichten Abweichung im Verhältnis zur heutigen. Genauer:

Diese Differenz ist auf den Massendefekt zurückzuführen, der bei Sauerstoff und Kohlenstoff unterschiedlich ausfällt.
