Placeopedia

Placeopedia war eine Internet-Anwendung, die Google Maps (Satellitenfotos) und Wikipedia-Artikel verband. Das Projekt war von September 2005 bis Mai 2011 verfügbar.

Placeopedia war ein Wiki. Nutzer konnten eine Nadel auf einer geeigneten Zoomstufe der Karte platzieren und mit einem einschlägigen Wikipedia-Artikel verlinken. Jeder Nutzer, der anschließend diesen Kartenteil aufsuchte, sah dann die entsprechenden Wikipedia-Links und den Namen des Benutzers, der die Nadel platziert hatte.

Die Informationen konnte man auch in Google Earth ansehen mit Hilfe von KML, sogenannten Network Links.

Placeopedia bot auch Daten unter der Creative-Commons-Lizenz.
