Polyol

Als Polyole wird eine Gruppe von organischen Verbindungen bezeichnet, die mehrere Hydroxylgruppen (-OH) enthalten (Polyalkohol, mehrwertiger Alkohol). Polyole können sowohl linear (zum Beispiel Sorbit) als auch zyklisch (zum Beispiel Inosit) aufgebaut sein.

Die Anzahl der Hydroxylgruppen in einer chemischen Verbindung wird durch die Endung angezeigt. Enthält eine organische Verbindung ein, zwei oder drei Hydroxylgruppen wird die Endung -ol, -diol oder -triol angehängt, ab vier und mehr Hydroxylgruppen spricht man allgemein von einem Polyol.

Eigenschaften

Da der Überbegriff Polyol eine rein chemische Nomenklatur ist und nur das Vorhandensein mehrerer Hydroxylgruppen anzeigt, kann man den Polyolen keine allgemeinen Eigenschaften zuordnen. Polyole sind bei Raumtemperatur meist hochviskos (zähflüssig) bis fest. Dies liegt begründet in der Tatsache, dass sich Wasserstoffbrücken unter den einzelnen Molekülen ausbilden.
