Ursprünglich bedeutet Rüssel (griech. Proboscis) bei Tieren eine verlängerte, fleischige Nase mit den Nasenlöchern am unteren, freien Ende. Im weiteren Sinne bezeichnet der Begriff die in ähnlicher Art verlängerten Mundteile bei vielen anderen Tieren.

  • Bei Elefanten stellt der Rüssel ein langes, äußerst bewegliches und mit feinem Tastgefühl begabtes muskuläres Organ dar, das sich im Laufe der Entwicklungsgeschichte aus dem Zusammenwachsen von Oberlippe und Nase bildete. Es dient seinem Besitzer als Waffe, als Greifhand beim Fressen, als Saug- und Druckpumpe beim Trinken. Gelegentlich wird der Elefantenrüssel beim Baden oder Schwimmen auch als eine Art Schnorchel eingesetzt.
  • Bei Tapiren ist der Rüssel weniger ausgeprägt als bei Elefanten, bei Schweinen nur gering.
  • Bei anderen Säugetieren wie Igel, Nasenbär und Ameisenbär spricht man wegen der optischen Ähnlichkeit häufig ebenfalls von einem Rüssel.
  • Bei Schmetterlingen besteht der teilweise sehr lange Saugrüssel aus den umgewandelten Unterkiefern. Er wird im Ruhezustand eingezogen oder eingerollt und dient zum Aufsaugen des Blütennektars oder (bei indonesischen Schmetterlingen) des Blutes warmblütiger Lebewesen, im Bedarfsfall auch zum Anritzen von Blüten oder der Haut.
  • Bei anderen Insekten, z. B. Fliegen und Käfern, v. a. Wanzen, stellt der Saugrüssel ein Saugorgan dar, das im Bedarfsfall auch zum vorherigen Aufstechen von Oberflächen verwendet wird.
  • Auch manche Schnecken, Würmer, Krebse und Quallen besitzen Fortsätze, die in Aussehen und Funktion an einen Rüssel erinnern und deswegen so genannt werden.
