Das Prosencephalon (Vorderhirn) ist der vordere Teil des Gehirns und das übergeordnete Zentrum für die Mehrzahl der Prozesse im Zentralnervensystem. Es besteht aus

Einige Anatomen und Neurowissenschaftler verwenden die Begriffe Vorderhirn und Großhirn synonym, zumeist wird unter „Großhirn“ aber nur das Telencephalon verstanden.

Die Zusammenfassung von Tel- und Diencephalon zum Prosencephalon ergibt sich neben den engen funktionellen Beziehungen auch aus der Embryologie. Das Gehirn entsteht zunächst als bläschenförmiges Gebilde am Vorderende des Neuralrohrs. Dann entwickelt sich durch unterschiedliches Wachstum zunächst ein Zwei- dann ein Dreiblasenstadium. Die vordere Blase wird zum Prosencephalon, die mittlere zum Mesencephalon, die hintere zum Rhombencephalon. Die vordere und hintere Blase untergliedern sich in der weiteren Entwicklung noch einmal (Fünfblasenstadium) wodurch Telencephalon und Diencephalon bzw. Metencephalon (mit Pons und Cerebellum) und Myelencephalon entstehen.
