Queen Consort

Als queen consort (dt. Königsgemahlin, Gemahlin des Königs) bezeichnet man im englischen Sprachgebrauch im Gegensatz zur queen regnant (dt. regierende Königin) eine Königin bzw. Queen, welche diesen Status nicht aus eigenem Recht, sondern lediglich als royal consort[1] – nämlich als Ehepartner eines souveränen Monarchen – erhalten hat.[2]

Der formelle Titel in der Britischen Monarchie lautet „Queen Consort“, obwohl oftmals die Bezeichnung als „Queen“ gebräuchlicher ist, da sie als Ehefrau eines Königs dessen Würden innehat[1]: So gilt auch für sie die Anrede Her Majesty und ihren Tod zu planen kam einem Hochverrat gleich, genauso wie mit ihr in sexueller Beziehung zu stehen.[3]

Trotzdem hat eine queen consort im Unterschied zu einer queen regnant nicht denselben Status wie ein König, sondern ist diesem vom Rang her nachgeordnet.[3] Auch der männliche Gegenpart – nämlich der Ehegatte einer queen regnant – nimmt gegenüber seiner Frau und souveränen Monarchin einen niedrigeren Rang ein[1], was sich bei ihm allerdings auch in der Anrede als Royal Highness widerspiegelt.

Auch wenn er oft als prince consort (dt. Prinzgemahl) bezeichnet wird, hat ein männlicher royal consort im Gegensatz zur weiblichen und üblicheren queen consort keinen festgelegten formalen Titel. Philipp II. von Spanien erhielt von seiner Gattin Queen Mary I. den Titel „King Consort“, Queen Victoria ernannte Albert von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha zum „Prince Consort“, während Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, als Gatte von Elisabeth II., von ihr den Titel eines Prinzen verliehen bekam.[1]
