Die Verlagsgruppe Random House, Inc. inklusive der zugehörigen Dachmarke Random House befindet sich im Besitz der Bertelsmann AG und fungiert als Dachgesellschaft für alle Bertelsmann-Verlage.

Geschichte

Der Name geht zurück auf das US-Verlagsunternehmen Random House, das 1925 von Bennett Cerf und Donald Klopfer gegründet und 1998 von Bertelsmann mitsamt der Marke übernommen wurde. Diese wurde dann als weltweite Dachmarke etabliert. Damit einher gingen die Eingliederung der bisherigen Bertelsmann-Verlagsgruppe in München und die Umbenennung in Verlagsgruppe Random House GmbH. Random House ist die weltgrößte englischsprachige Verlagsgruppe, und die zweitgrößte deutschsprachige. Das Unternehmen tätigt verstärkt Zukäufe im Buchgeschäft.

Das Unternehmen digitalisierte 2007 Teile seiner Buchbestände (5.000 Titel, Stand: Februar 2007), um sie für Suchmaschinen auffindbar zu machen.[2] Mit Insight ermöglicht Random House seinen Kunden eine festgelegte Anzahl von Seiten pro Titel zu durchsuchen.[3] Im Oktober 2008 gab Random House bekannt, eine Kooperation mit Google einzugehen. Im Zuge dieser Zusammenarbeit wird Google die digitalen Buchbestände von Random House in seine Buchsuchmaschine Google Book Search aufnehmen.[4]
