Der Österreichische Sozialdienst bietet eine Möglichkeit den neunmonatigen Zivildienst durch einen 12 Monate dauernden Ersatzdienst im Ausland abzuleisten. Der Österreichische Sozialdienst ist ein Teilbereich der nicht auf Profit ausgerichteten Organisation Österreichischer Auslandsdienst , die 1998 von Dr. Andreas Maislinger gegründet wurde.

Der Auslandsdienst kann in drei Bereichen geleistet werden: Sozialdienst, Gedenkdienst oder Friedensdienst. Der Sozialdienst dient der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung eines Landes und kann in verschiedenen Stellen bzw. Einsatzstellen geleistet werden. Der Auslandsdienst hat im Bereich Sozialdienst 32 verschiedene Einsatzstellen mit 69 Plätzen (Stand Anfang 2004) und ist damit die größte Trägerorganisation für Auslandsdiener in Österreich. Diese Partnerorganisationen sind in 22 verschiedenen Staaten und über 4 Kontinente verteilt und haben verschiedenste Aufgaben und Ziele.

Zu diesen Stellen gehören: Straßenkinderprojekte, Bildungsprojekte und Kinderdörfer, Stellen für Alten- und Behindertenbetreuung, für medizinische Betreuung und Versorgung, sowie für Hilfe für Homosexuelle. Weiters gibt es als Stellen Umwelt- und Entwicklungsprojekte in den Ländern der Dritten Welt.
