Richard Aldington

Richard Aldington (* 8. Juli 1892 in Portsmouth, Hampshire; † 27. Juli 1962 in Sury-en-Vaux, Département Cher) war ein englischer Schriftsteller.

Aldington studierte in London und veröffentlichte schon als Jugendlicher seine ersten Gedichte. Nach seinem Studium lebte er als freier Schriftsteller in London, wo er 1913 die unter dem Pseudonym H. D. bekannte US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin Hilda Doolittle heiratete. Doolittle ließ sich 1937 wieder von ihm scheiden.

Aldington schloss sich um 1912 der Bewegung der Imagisten an und fungierte als Herausgeber für die avantgardistische Zeitschrift The egoist.

Aldington nahm am Ersten Weltkrieg teil. Seine Erlebnisse flossen natürlich auch in sein literarisches Schaffen ein. So beherrschen Gesellschaftskritik und Pessimismus sein späteres Werk. Für Latein und Griechisch gilt er immer noch als bedeutender Übersetzer.

In seinem Spätwerk veröffentlichte er einige Biographien, die sehr fundiert, aber auch sehr kritisch angelegt sind.

Richard Aldington verstarb im Alter von 70 Jahren.
