Mit Abtastrate, auch Samplingrate oder Samplerate, wird in der digitalen Signalverarbeitung die Häufigkeit benannt, mit der ein Signal pro Zeitintervall abgetastet wird. Der Abstand zwischen den Abtastzeitpunkten ist das Abtastintervall. Ist dieser Abstand konstant, so heißt die Abtastrate auch Abtastfrequenz oder Samplingfrequenz. Die Wahl einer konstanten Abtastfrequenz vereinfacht die Weiterverarbeitung des Signals.

Grundlagen

Die gemessenen Amplitudenwerte werden mit einem Analog-Digital-Wandler digitalisiert. Gemäß dem Nyquist-Abtasttheorem erfasst eine Abtastfrequenz fa nur Frequenzen fmax, die kleiner als halb so groß sind:

f_\mathrm{max}<\frac{f_\mathrm{a}}{2} \,

Bei der Abtastung von Signalen mit Frequenzen oberhalb dieser Grenze treten Fehler auf (Alias-Effekte). Mittels eines Tiefpassfilters zur Beschränkung der Eingangsfrequenz auf fmax können Abtastfehler wirksam vermieden werden.

Die Abtastrate wird in Hertz oder Samples per Second (Samples/sec), kurz SPS oder S/s, angegeben.

Abtastrate bei Audio-CDs

Audio-CDs verwenden eine Samplingfrequenz von 44,1 kHz, ausreichend für Frequenzen von etwa f_\mathrm{max} = 20 \,\mathrm{kHz}. Audio-DVDs besitzen manchmal Abtastraten von 96 oder gar 192 kHz.

Die sehr hohen Abtastfrequenzen werden angestrebt, um die Originalaufnahme schon im ersten Arbeitsschritt im Studio so originalgetreu wie möglich aufzunehmen. Jeder sich anschließende Bearbeitungsschritt kann die Qualität höchstens erhalten.

Es soll auch einen psychoakustischen Effekt geben, der besagt, dass sich angeblich die hochfrequenten Obertöne auch jenseits der Hörgrenze durch Interferenzen bemerkbar machen. Eine Aufnahme klinge bei der Präsenz höchstfrequenter Anteile voller und sorge so für nötige Wärme einer Aufnahme. Diese Aussage ist wissenschaftlich nicht gesichert.
