Mit dem Act of Settlement (dt. Grundordnung) schuf das englische Parlament 1701 die neue Grundlage der Thronfolge im Königreich England. Als Thronfolgeregelung ist der Act of Settlement bis heute im Vereinigten Königreich gültig.

Der Act of Settlement schreibt fest, dass nach dem Tod der kinderlosen Königin Anne, der letzten Protestantin im Haus Stuart, das Recht der Thronfolge auf die protestantischen Nachkommen der Sophie von der Pfalz, Tochter der Elisabeth Stuart und somit die nächste lebende protestantische Verwandte des Königshauses, und damit an das Haus Hannover übergehen sollte. Weiterhin sollen auch alle jene ihrer Nachkommen ihr Anrecht auf den englischen (bzw. heute britischen) Thron verlieren, die einen katholischen Partner heiraten. Durch dieses Gesetz wurden sämtliche Katholiken aus der englischen bzw. später britischen Thronfolge ausgeschlossen.

Der Royal Marriages Act von 1772 ergänzte diese Bestimmungen später. Dieser legt fest, dass die Mitglieder der königlichen Familie für eine Heirat die Zustimmung des Monarchen benötigen.

Über eine Abschaffung des Actes wird derzeit diskutiert, so soll laut einem britischen Zeitungsbericht, nach den nächsten Parlamentswahlen die Thronfolge neu geregelt werden, Katholiken sollen nicht mehr ausgeschlossen werden und weibliche Königskinder künftig männlichen Erben in der Thronfolge gleichgestellt sein [1].
