Shurugwi

Shurugwi, auch Selukwe und Churugwi, hat gut 17.000 Einwohner (2006) und liegt 1.500 m hoch südöstlich von Gweru im Gebiet des Great Dyke in der Provinz Midlands in Simbabwe. Es ist eine Stadt des Bergbaus. In den Shurugwi Chrome Mines fördert die Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company (ZIMASCO) Chromit. In geringerem Umfang wird auch Gold gewonnen, das seit 1890 lange die Grundlage des Bergbaus war. Das Chrom wird in Kwekwe geschmolzen.

Der Bergbau täuscht leicht darüber hinweg, das das Umland von Kleinbauern dominiert wird. Die Probleme von Shurugwi werden vor allem durch deren Verarmung wegen der galoppierenden Inflation definiert. Trotzdem ist es eine Hochburg der ZANU, der Partei des Präsidenten Robert Mugabe.
