Der Begriff Spaza shop bezeichnet ein kleines, informelles Ladengeschäft im ländlichen Südafrika, das normalerweise von zu Hause aus betrieben wird. In den Läden gibt es alles zu kaufen, was für den täglichen Bedarf benötigt wird. Diese Klasse von Läden entstand durch die Ausbreitung von Townships in der Fläche, was die Anreise zu einem formellen Einzelhandelsgeschäft zu schwierig oder teuer machte. Sie stellen für die Inhaber eine attraktive Einnahmequelle dar. Die Betreiber fahren meist selbst mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln oder Taxis in größere Ansiedlungen und kaufen die Waren in Einzelhandelsgeschäften ein, um sie in ihrem eigenen Dorf weiter zu verkaufen.
