Die Hauptrolle ist eine Figur in der Literatur oder der Darstellenden Kunst (Theater, Film, Ballett, Oper usw.), welche die Erzählung oder Choreographie maßgeblich vorantreibt. Die Hauptrolle wird mit dem Hauptdarsteller besetzt. In den meisten Fällen handelt es sich dabei um den Protagonisten, jedoch kann auch ein Antagonist die Hauptrolle innehaben. Sie zu verkörpern kann für einen Schauspieler mit höchstem Ruhm einhergehen. So ist der Oscar für die beste weibliche oder männliche Hauptrolle einer der wichtigsten Filmpreise für einen Schauspieler.

Titelrolle versus Hauptrolle

Obwohl es sich meistens um dieselbe Figur handelt, darf die Hauptrolle nicht grundsätzlich mit der Titelrolle verwechselt werden. Die Titelrolle entspricht der Figur eines Werkes, die ihm seinen Namen gibt (Beispiele: Wilhelm Tell im gleichnamigen Theaterstück oder Forrest Gump).
