Der U880 ist ein in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik hergestellter 8-Bit-Hauptprozessor für Computer. Er ist in n-MOS-Technik gefertigt und steckt in einem DIL40-Gehäuse.

Die U880-CPU wurde als Allzweckprozessor zwischen 1980 und 1989 in den Heimcomputern KC 85/2, KC 85/3 und KC 85/4 des VEB MikroelektronikWilhelm PieckMühlhausen, den Rechnern Z9001, KC 85/1 und KC87 des VEB Kombinat Robotron, im Z1013 von Robotron-Elektronik Riesa, im einzigen Arcade-Automaten der DDR (Polyplay) und darüber hinaus in weiteren Büro-, Klein- und Amateurcomputern wie zum Beispiel dem A 5120 des VEB Buchungsmaschinenwerk Karl-Marx-Stadt eingesetzt. Sie ist aufgrund des leicht erlernbaren Befehlssatzes für einfache Datenverarbeitungs- oder Steuerungsaufgaben und Lehrzwecke gut geeignet.

Der U880 ist eine nahezu identische Kopie des 8-Bit-Prozessors Z80 von Zilog. Er wurde als nicht lizenziertes Plagiat vom VEB MikroelektronikKarl MarxErfurt mittels Reverse Engineering entwickelt und hergestellt. Ein pin- und funktionskompatibles Prozessorsystem mit der Bezeichnung U 84C00 DC auf Basis der CMOS-Technologie befand sich in der Entwicklung. Der Schaltkreissatz dieser CMOS-Variante bestand aus U 84C20 DC (PIO), U 84C30 DC (CTC) und der SIO U 80C40 DC.

Folgende Varianten des U880 waren erhältlich:

  • 80-CPU - entspricht dem UB 880 als Export-Version
  • 80A-CPU - entspricht dem UA 880 als Export-Version
  • U 880 - entspricht dem original Z80 (anfängliche Bezeichnung, später umbenannt in UB 880)
  • UA 880 - entspricht der Z80A, Taktfrequenz maximal 4 MHz.
  • UB 880 - entspricht dem original Z80. Taktfrequenz maximal 2,5 MHz
  • VB 880 - Z80-Version mit erweiterter Temperaturspezifikation (−25°C bis 85°C) für industrielle Anwendungen. Taktfrequenz maximal 2,5 MHz
  • UD 880 - Variante mit eingeschränkten Bauelementedaten (Die Messdaten des Schaltkreises entsprachen nicht der Norm), ein sogenannter Anfalltyp. Taktfrequenz maximal 1 MHz

Als Peripheriebausteine wurden Nachbauten der Zilog-ICs PIO (U855), SIO (U856), CTC (U857), DMA (U858) und DART (U8563) hergestellt. Alle Peripheriebausteine gab es ebenfalls in den oben genannten Takt- und Temperaturbereichsvarianten. Als Speicher können EPROMs, zum Beispiel U2732, und dRAM 64K × 1 wie der U2164 verwendet werden.
