Die Baldwin Locomotive Works waren der weltweit größte Hersteller von Dampflokomotiven. Sie wurden 1831 von Matthias William Baldwin in Philadelphia, USA gegründet. 1902 übersiedelte die Firma nach Eddystone (Pennsylvania).

Baldwin lieferte Lokomotiven jeder Größe an zahlreiche Bahngesellschaften in Nordamerika sowie in zahlreiche andere Länder auf der ganzen Welt.

Paradoxerweise konnten die Baldwin Locomotive Works ihre Marktmacht mit dem Aufkommen der Diesellokomotiven und Elektrolokomotiven genauso wenig wie die nächstgrößeren Konkurrenten American Locomotive Company (ALCO) und LIMA Locomotive Works (LIMA) nutzen. Auch der Zusammenschluss 1950 zur Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation mit der Absicht zur Produktion von Diesellokomotiven war nicht erfolgreich. Mit dem Ende der Dampflokomotiv-Ära endete auch die Geschichte der Firma im Jahre 1956 und ihr Bau von Fahrzeugen.
