Balenciaga

Cristóbal Balenciaga (* 21. Januar 1895 in Getaria, Spanien; † 23. März 1972 in Jávea, Spanien) war ein einflussreicher Modeschöpfer der Haute Couture.

Balenciaga wurde als Sohn eines baskischen Fischers und einer Näherin geboren. Gefördert durch eine spanische Gräfin eröffnete er 1915 in San Sebastián einen Schneidersalon, dem sich Haute Couture-Salons in Madrid und Barcelona anschlossen. 1937 emigrierte er zu Beginn des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs nach Paris, wo er gleichfalls einen Haute-Couture-Salon führte. Um seine Entwürfe vor Kopien zu schützen, fanden seine Modenschauen immer einen Monat nach allen anderen Couture-Veranstaltungen statt.

Seit 2001 gehört die Marke Balenciaga zur Gucci Group des französischen Luxusgüterkonzerns PPR.
