Dorothea Tanning (* 25. August 1912 in Galesburg, Illinois, USA) ist eine US-amerikanische Künstlerin und lebt in New York.

Leben

Die autodidaktische Künstlerin lässt sich nach Studien in Galesburg und Chicago 1935 in New York nieder. 1936 erhält sie ihre prägende Anregung durch die Ausstellung Fantastic Art, DaDa and Surrealism in New York; dort sieht sie erstmals dadaistische und surrealistische Werke. 1942 lernt sie Max Ernst kennen, den sie am 24. Oktober 1946 heiratet und der sie in den Kreis der Surrealisten einführt. Sie ist Teilnehmerin am Bel-Ami-Wettbewerb 1946, bei dem sie - neben anderen surrealistischen Größen wie z. B. Salvador Dalí - das Gemälde Die Versuchung des Heiligen Antonius einreicht, mit dem sie ihren eigenen Stil der erotischen Metaphern Ausdruck verleihen kann. Später löst sie sich von dem immer beklemmender werdenden surrealistischen Stil und findet ihren eigenen künstlerischen Weg in einem farbbetonten Impressionismus.

Erste Einzelausstellung 1954 in Paris. Im Jahr 1959 war Dorothea Tanning Teilnehmerin der documenta II in Kassel. 2004 wird sie Ehrenmitglied der Max Ernst Gesellschaft.
