The Riddle ist ein 1984 erschienener Song von Nik Kershaw. Der Titel sowie der Liedtext lassen ein klassisches Rätsel vermuten, was dazu führte, dass versucht wurde, den Song auf eine tiefere Bedeutung hin zu entschlüsseln.

Jahre später erklärt Kershaw, dass es sich um einen wahllos zusammengesetzten Text ohne jeden Sinn handele. Er habe den Song unter Zeitdruck geschrieben und deshalb einen unsinnigen Text (“jibberish lyrics”) verwendet. Dieser Songtext wurde dann jedoch beibehalten und der Song erhielt den Namen The Riddle.[1]

Das Lied war ein europaweiter Top-10-Hit und besonders ein Radio-Hit (Nummer 1 der deutschen Airplay-Charts).

1999 brachte Lightforce das Lied neu heraus und nannte das Cover Take Your Time. 1999/2000 hatte Gigi D’Agostino mit einer Dance-Version von The Riddle erneut einen Top-10-Hit. Außerdem wurde das Lied von Audiosmog feat. Tobi Schlegel gecovert.
