Die Bank Identification Number (BIN) wird zur Identifikation von Kredit- und Debitkarten beim Routing innerhalb von Geldautomaten-Netzen verwendet. Anhand der BIN kann der verwendete Kartentyp und der Karten-Issuer (also die Bank, die die Karte herausgegeben hat) identifiziert werden. Obwohl eine BIN internationale Gültigkeit besitzt, werden für Auslandsüberweisungen andere Bankidentifikationsnummern eingesetzt: Die International Bank Account Number und der SWIFT-Code. Gründe dafür liegen auf der Hand: Überweisungen sind nicht zwingend an eine Karte, sondern eher an Konten gebunden. Außerdem haben Banken meistens mehrere BIN-Codes, für jeden angebotenen Kartentyp eine.

Der genaue Aufbau der Bank Identification Number ist in der Norm ISO 7812 beschrieben. Eine andere Bezeichnung für BIN-Codes ist dort Issuer Identification Number (IIN). Die BIN der eigenen Kreditkarte bekommt man ganz einfach heraus: Es sind die ersten 6 Stellen der 16-stelligen Kreditkartennummer. Bei EC-/Maestro Karten ist die Sache schon etwas schwieriger. Manche Banken drucken auf der Rückseite ihrer Karten neben der Bankleitzahl manchmal auch die BIN ab. Ansonsten hilft nur eine Suche im Internet oder eine Anfrage bei der entsprechenden Bank.

Die American Banking Association ist die zentrale Registrierungsstelle für BIN-Codes. Sie stellt ihre Liste aller BINs der Öffentlichkeit zwar nicht zur Verfügung, aber inzwischen existieren recht gute alternative Listen und BIN-Suchmaschinen.
