Tour of Britain

Die Tour of Britain ist ein Radrennen durch Großbritannien.

Das Etappenrennen wurde 2004 zum ersten Mal ausgetragen und nimmt seit 2005 an der UCI Europe Tour teil. Es ist in die Kategorie 2.1 eingestuft. An dem Rennen dürfen Nationalteams aus Schottland, Wales und Irland teilnehmen, ein englisches Team ist kontroverserweise nicht erlaubt. Organisiert wird das Rennen von der British Cycling Federation.

Geschichte

Als Vorgänger des heutigen Rennens gelten folgende Radrennen:

Daily Express Tour of Britain (1951–1955)

Milk Race (1958–1993)

Zu seinem Höhepunkt war das Rennen ein zweiwöchiges Amateurrennen, vergleichbar mit der Friedensfahrt. Seit 1983 durften Profis an den Start gehen.

Kellogg's Tour (1987–1994)

Sieger waren unter anderem: Robert Millar (1989), Phil Anderson (1991, 1993), Maximilian Sciandri (1992) und, im letzten Jahr Maurizio Fondriest.

PruTour (1998–1999)

Stuart O'Grady gewann die Austragung 1998, Marc Wauters siegte 1999.

Tour of Britain 2004

Die erste Austragung der Tour of Britain fand über fünf Tage Ende September statt. Damals war das Rennen noch in die Kategorie 2.3 eingestuft.

Den Höhepunkt erreichte die Tour bei einem 72 Kilometer langen Kriterium durch London. Zehntausende Zuschauer sahen einen langen Ausreißversuch von dem einheimischen Fahrer Bradley Wiggins. In der letzten Runde wurde er vom Feld eingefangen und Enrico Degano vom Team Barloworld gewann den Massensprint. Der Kolumbianer Mauricio Ardila holte sich den Gesamtsieg.

Tour of Britain 2005

Die zweite Austragung 2005 wurde in sechs Etappen ausgetragen. Start war am 30. August in Glasgow und Ziel war am 4. September in London.
