Der Begriff transdermal (von lat. trans „durch, hindurch” und griech. derma „Haut“) wird meist zur Beschreibung der entsprechenden Verabreichung von Arzneistoffen, die über transdermale Pflaster von der Haut aufgenommen (resorbiert) werden, benutzt.

Beispiele sind das Opioid Fentanyl in der Schmerztherapie, Nikotinpflaster zur Raucherentwöhnung, Östrogene zur Hormonersatztherapie (HET) und NO-freisetzende Nitroverbindungen zur Behandlung ischämischer Krankheiten wie Angina pectoris, Scopolamin zur Behandlung einer Kinetose (Reisekrankheit) und Östrogen/Gestagen-Wirkstoffkombinationen zur hormonellen Empfängnisverhütung.

Von der österreichischen Biotechnologiefirma Intercell wird derzeit ein immunstimulierendes Impfpflaster (Vaccine Enhancement Patch, VEP) gegen pandemische Grippe in einer Phase-II-Studie getestet, das zu einer verbesserten Immunantwort bei einer Einmalimpfung führen soll.[1]

Auch Giftstoffe können auf diesem Weg aufgenommen werden, so Blausäure im Rahmen einer Blausäurevergiftung.
