Herkunft und Bedeutung

Der im englischen Sprachraum gebräuchliche Name ist abgeleitet von dem griechischen Namen Basileios (griechisch Βασιλειος), der seinerseits auf basileus (gr. βασιλευς) mit der Bedeutung „König“ zurückging.

Im arabischen Sprachraum hat Basil (arabisch ‏باسل‎) die Bedeutung „mutig“, „tapfer“.[2]
