Basotho

Die Basotho (Singular: Mosotho) sind ein aus Lesotho stammendes Bergvolk, das im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand.

Zwischen 1836 und 1848 wurden versprengte Stämme in die Nation des Königs Moshoeshoe I. integriert, so dass die Bevölkerung des Stammes von 25.000 auf 80.000 anwuchs. Der französische Missionar Eugène Casalis hielt sich zu dieser Zeit viel bei den Basotho auf und schrieb eine Monografie über sie.

Das Basotho Cultural Village, ein Dorf im QwaQwa National Park in Südafrika demonstriert die Geschichte, Kultur und den Lebensstil der Basotho. Bekannt wurde dieses Dorf auch durch Helmut Lotti, der sein TV-Special von Out of Africa dort aufzeichnete.
