Video over IP ermöglicht den Austausch von Live Videodaten im Rahmen von Chats. In der Regel wird dabei gleichzeitig Voice over IP zum Einsatz gebracht.

Video over IP wird u. a. in Live Support Systemen genutzt.

Durch das Zusammenspiel von Online-Informationen Voice und Video over IP wird der Support „persönlicher“. Gleichzeitig werden parallele Kommunikationskanäle wie z. B. das Telefon eingespart.

Wegen des teilweise erheblich hohen Datentransfers ist in der Regel ein schneller Netzzugang erforderlich.
