Viscount Hailsham

Viscount Hailsham, of Hailsham in der Grafschaft Sussex, ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom, welcher von der Familie Hogg getragen wird. Er ist nach der Stadt Hailsham benannt.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde 1929 dem konservativen Politiker und Anwalt Douglas Hogg verliehen, der danach zweimal Lordkanzler war. Dieser war bereits im Jahr zuvor zum Baron Hailsham ernannt worden. Dieser Titel wird nunmehr als nachgeordneter Titel geführt.

Weitere Titel der Familie

Der erste Viscount war der Enkel von Sir James Weir Hogg, 1. Baronet; die Viscounts Hailsham stehen daher in der Erbfolge der Hogg Baronets.

Der zweite Viscount, Quintin McGarel Hogg, war ebenfalls ein bekannter konservativer Politiker. Er war einer der ersten, der die Möglichkeit in Anspruch nahm, auf Lebenszeit auf seinen erblichen Titel zu verzichten. Dies geschah, um weiterhin Mitglied des Unterhauses sein zu können. Später wurde er dann zum Peer auf Lebenszeit als Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone ernannt. Bei seinem Tod lebte der erbliche Titel, der bis dahin geruht hatte, wieder auf.
