Viscount Hampden ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel, der zweimal geschaffen wurde, einmal in der Peerage of Great Britain und das zweite Mal in der Peerage of the United Kingdom. Er wird von der Familie Brand getragen.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Glynde Place bei Lewes in Sussex.

Verleihungen

Der Titel wurde erstmals im Jahre 1776, in der Peerage of Great Britain, an den Diplomaten und Politiker Robert Hampden, 4. Baron Trevor verliehen. Er hatte über mehrere Jahre das Amt des Postmaster General inne. Der Titel erlosch 1824 mit dem Tode des dritten Viscounts.

Die zweite Verleihung erfolgte 1884 in der Peerage of the United Kingdom an den liberalen Politiker und langjährigen Speaker des House of Commons Sir Henry Brand.

In beiden Verleihungen stammen die Titelinhaber von dem Patrioten John Hampden, einem Führer der bürgerlichen Revolution während des Englischen Bürgerkrieges (1642-1649), ab.

nachgeordnete Titel

Der Vater des ersten Viscount der Verleihung von 1776 Sir Thomas Trevor war seinerseits ein bedeutender Jurist und Politiker. Er wurde 1712 zum Baron Trevor erhoben. Nachdem sein Sohn zum Viscount erhoben worden war, wurde die Baronie als nachgeordneter Titel geführt. Diese erlosch gleichzeitig mit der Viscountswürde.

Der erste Viscount der zweiten Verleihung erbte 1890 beim Tode seines älteren Bruders den Titel eines Baron Dacre, eine alte englische Baronie aus dem Jahre 1321. Als der vierte Viscount 1965 ohne männliche Abkömmlinge verstarb, fiel die Viscountswürde an seinen jüngeren Bruder. Der Titel des Baron Dacre konnte demgegenüber auch in der weiblichen Linie vererbt werden.

Ansonsten sind keine nachgeordneten Titel vorhanden.
