Viscount Rothermere

Viscount Rothermere, of Hemsted in der Grafschaft Kent, ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom, der von einem Zweig der Familie Harmsworth geführt wird.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1919 für den Zeitungsmagnaten Harold Harmsworth geschaffen. Dieser hatte seine vielgelesenen Boulevardzeitungen ganz in den Dienst der alliierten Kriegspropaganda gestellt. Außerdem war er zeitweise Vorsitzender des Luftwaffenrates (President of the Air Council) in der Regierung Lloyd George gewesen.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der erste Viscount war bereits 1910 zum Baronet, of Hemsted in der Grafschaft Kent, gemacht worden. 1914 wurde Harmsworth als Baron Rothermere, of Hemsted in der Grafschaft Kent, in den erblichen Adelsstand erhoben. Der letztgenannte Titel gehört ebenfalls zu Peerage of the United Kingdom. Beide Titel werden als nachgeordnete Titel vom jeweiligen Viscount geführt.

Weitere Titel der Familie

Von den vier Brüdern des ersten Viscounts wurde der älteste (Alfred Harmsworth) ebenfalls zum Viscount, während ein jüngerer (Cecil Harmsworth) zum Baron Harmsworth erhoben wurde. Die beiden anderen Brüder erhielten Baronetswürden.

Eine Erbberechtigung untereinander besteht allerdings nicht.

Vermögen

Der jeweilige Viscount ist stets Vorstandsvorsitzender des Daily Mail and General Trust, eines der größten Medienkonzerne im Vereinigten Königreich. Hierzu gehören unter anderem die Zeitungen Daily Mail und Evening Standard sowie diverse Lokalzeitungen, eine Beteiligung an Independent Television News und lokale Radiostationen im Vereinigten Königreich und in Australien.

Die Familie steht mit einem Vermögen von mehr als einer Milliarde Pfund auf Platz 51 der Sunday Times Rich List 2006.
