Das Theaterviertel West End liegt im Zentrum Londons und wird begrenzt durch The Strand im Süden, Marylebone Road im Norden, Park Lane im Westen und Regent Street im Osten, obwohl The South Bank Complex als Bestandteil angesehen wird.

Die Straßen Drury Lane, Shaftsbury Avenue und Strand bilden den Kern des Viertels und werden in Analogie zum Broadway als das sogenannte Theatreland bezeichnet. West-End-Theater sind etwa Her Majesty's Theatre und Theatre Royal Haymarket am Haymarket, das Adelphi Theatre und das Lyceum Theatre am Strand, das Royal Opera House in Covent Garden und das Prince Edward Theatre.

Neben den kommerziellen Theatreland-Theatern existieren noch weitere, vorwiegend öffentlich geförderte Theater in London. Dazu gehören das Royal National Theatre, die Royal Shakespeare Company und das Royal Court Theatre. Das Globe Theatre stellt hier eine Besonderheit dar, da es einen exakten Nachbau eines klassischen Shakespeare Theaters abbildet und von dem Globe Trust komplett finanziert wird, d. h. keine Subventionen erhält. Die fringe theatres (ungefähr: „Alternativtheater“) sind eine weitere Kategorie von Theatern oder Festivals. Sie sind mit den New Yorker Off-Broadway- und Off-Off-Broadway-Aufführungen zu vergleichen.

Gespielt werden an den Londoner Theatern vorwiegend Musicals, Komödien und klassische oder moderne Theaterstücke. Nach Angaben des 1997 veröffentlichten Wyndham Reports betrug der Umsatz 1997 in den West End Theatern 1,075 Milliarden GBP und es wurden 41.000 Menschen beschäftigt.
