William Byrd

William Byrd (* wahrscheinlich 1543 in Lincolnshire; † 6. Juli 1623 in Stondon Massey/Essex, nach anderen Quellen: * 1538; † 4. Juli 1623) war ein englischer Komponist und Organist.

William Byrd

Byrd war der bedeutendste Komponist zu Zeiten von William Shakespeare. Seine Psalmen und Motetten sowie seine Madrigale gehören zu den bestaufgenommenen Kompositionen des 16. Jahrhunderts. Zudem schrieb er Orgel- und Klavierwerke.

Byrd war seit 1572 zusammen mit Thomas Tallis Organist der Chapel Royal in London. Er war ein bedeutender katholischer Kirchenkomponist. Seine Virginalkompositionen finden sich in verschiedenen Sammlungen, so etwa im Fitzwilliam Virginal Book wie auch im Lady Nevills Book. Als wichtigster Musikschaffender der Tudorzeit hatte er den Ruf eines «englischen Palestrina». Byrd erhielt zusammen mit Tallis das Privileg des Monopols für Notendruck von Königin Elisabeth I. von England. Er war Lehrer von Thomas Morley und Thomas Tomkins.

In den etwa 500 Werken seines Schaffens nimmt die Chormusik eine zentrale Stelle ein. Byrd komponierte Messen, Motetten, Madrigale, Kanons, Werke für Virginal und Streicher und anderes.
