XCF

XCF (von engl. eXperimental Computing Facility) ist das native Dateiformat des freien Bildbearbeitungsprogramms GIMP.

In einer XCF-Datei können Textbausteine, Pfade und Ebenen verlustfrei gespeichert werden, was es vergleichbar zu dem PSD- bzw. PSPImages-Format von Adobe Photoshop bzw. Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo macht. Die Layer können mit 8 Bit je Farbkanal im RGB-Farbraum und 8 Bit im Transparenzkanal abgespeichert werden. Bisher kann mit PSD-Dateien eine viel höhere Farbgenauigkeit durch 32-Bit-Farbkanäle erreichen werden, eine höhere Farbtiefe für GIMP befindet sich jedoch bereits in Planung. GIMP unterstützt auch eine transparente Kompression seines Dateiformates; implementiert sind die Kompressionsalgorithmen bzip2 und gz, die komprimierten Dateien haben dann die Endungen .xcf.bz2 und .xcf.gz.

Unterstützung außerhalb von GIMP

XCF wird voll unterstützt von folgenden Programmen:

  • Seashore, einer GIMP-basierten Mac-OS-X-Bildbearbeitung
  • CinePaint, ein GIMP-Fork
