Blue Collar

Unter dem Begriff Blue-Collar-Arbeiter (collar = engl. für Kragen) versteht man die zumeist in einem Produktionsbetrieb beschäftigten Industriearbeiter und Handwerker. Der ursprünglich aus dem Englischen stammende Begriff (blue-collar worker = gewerblicher Arbeiter) wird inzwischen auch international in der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und in den Sozialwissenschaften verwendet.

Die sprachliche Unterscheidung spielt an auf die unterschiedliche Kleidung der Arbeiter und der (Büro-) Angestellten (White-Collar[1]):

blue collar = Arbeitsanzug, Overall, Blaumann; white collar = Anzug, Krawatte etc., Weißkittel.

In den USA arbeiten zirka 40 % der Bevölkerung in Blue-Collar-Beschäftigungen.[2]

Die Sociologie du Travail[3] sieht die traditionelle Klassifikation blouse bleu/blouse blanche (ouvrier/technicien, secondaire/tertiaire) zunehmend ersetzt durch technologische Veränderungen im Produktionsprozess, die zum Entstehen einer „neuen Arbeiterklasse“ führen.
