Brightwater ist eine Stadt in der Region Tasman auf der Südinsel Neuseelands. Sie liegt 20 km südwestlich von Nelson an den Ufern des Wairoa River und am State Highway 6. Der Ort hatte beim Zensus 2006 1.794 ständige Einwohner. [1]

Das Erscheinungsbild des Flusses diente 1855 Alfred Saunders, dem Eigentümer einer ortsansässigen Flachsmühle, als Inspiration für den Namen der Stadt. Das Gebiet wurde jedoch bereits 1843 von Europäern besiedelt.

Brightwater ist der Geburtsort des Atomphysikers und Nobelpreisträgers Ernest Rutherford.
