Bioengineering

Bioengineering ist die Anwendung von Prinzipien der Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaften auf Gewebe, Zellen und Moleküle. Bioengineering unterscheidet sich von Biotechnologie, welche sich mit der Umsetzung biologischer Kenntnisse für industrielle Verfahren beschäftigt.[1]

Ein Beispiel für erfolgreiches Bioengineering stellt die Umkehrung des beta-Oxidation-Stoffwechselwegs in E. coli dar, die 2011 der Rice-Universität in Houston gelang. Dieser Weg, in den geeigneten Mikroorganismen realisiert, kann Biokraftstoffe effizienter produzieren als die normale Fettsäuresynthese.[2]
