Millikan LibraryDas California Institute of Technology (Technische Hochschule Kaliforniens), besser bekannt als Caltech, ist in Pasadena im Los Angeles County beheimatet und ist auf Natur- und Ingenieurswissenschaften spezialisiert. 1891 wurde es mit nur 31 Studenten gegründet, heute sind es etwa 2000 Studenten. Die Hochschule ist Mitglied der Association of American Universities, einem seit 1900 bestehenden Verbund führender forschungsintensiver nordamerikanischer Universitäten.
Das Jet Propulsion Laboratory der NASA, welches den Betrieb von Weltraumsonden überwacht, ist Teil der Universität. Das Institut ist an das Forschungsnetzwerk BIRN angeschlossen. Derzeitiger Präsident der Universität ist Jean-Lou Chameau.
Mit 310 Professoren und 2171 Studenten (2004-2005) ist die wissenschaftlich hochproduktive Universität extrem klein, trotzdem gehört sie laut diversen Rankings zu den zehn besten Universitäten der Welt. In der Geschichte der Universität haben Angehörige und Ehemalige insgesamt 31 Nobelpreise gewonnen, davon 13 in Physik, 9 in Physiologie oder Medizin, 6 in Chemie, sowie 2 in Ökonomie und einen Friedensnobelpreis.
