Earl of Perth ist ein britischer erblicher Adelstitel in der Peerage of Scotland, der von der Familie Drummond getragen wird.

Der jeweilige Earl ist kraft Amtes Chief des Clans Drummond. Stammsitz der Familie ist Stobhall bei Perth in Perth and Kinross.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1605 für James Drummond, 4. Lord Drummond, geschaffen. Dieser war Botschafter Schottlands in Spanien gewesen.

1716 wurde der Titel jedoch dem vierten Earl aberkannt, nachdem sich dieser am jakobitischen Aufstand von 1715 beteiligt hatte. Der Earl und seine Erben beanspruchten den Titel allerdings weiterhin.

Nach dem Aufstand von 1745 wurde auch der gesamte Besitz eingezogen. 1783 wurde dies, nicht jedoch die Aberkennung des Titels, rückgängig gemacht. Dies erfolgte erst 1853 durch Parlamentsbeschluss.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Urgroßvater des ersten Earls John Drummond war Justiciar of Scotia gewesen. Er wurde 1408 zum Lord Drummond of Cargill erhoben. Dieser Titel wird seit Schaffung der Earlswürde als nachgeordneter Titel geführt.

1911 erbte der elfte Viscount Strathallan den Titel eines Earl of Perth. Seit dieser Zeit wird dieser Titel, der 1686 geschaffen worden war, und die diesem nachgeordneten Titel Lord Drummond of Stobhall (geschaffen 1605), und Lord Drummond of Cromlix (geschaffen 1686) vom jeweiligen Earl als nachgeordnete Titel geführt. Die ferner getragene Würde eines Lord Maderty (geschaffen 1609) hatte 1692 der zweite Viscount Strathallan geerbt.

Alle nachgeordneten Titel gehören zur Peerage of Scotland. Der jeweilige Titelerbe führt den Höflichkeitstitel Viscount Strathallan.

Weitere Titel

Dem vierte Earl, dem die Earlswürde aberkannt wurde, wurde von dem jakobitischen Thronprätendenten James Stuart der Titel eines Duke of Perth zuerkannt, der zur jacobitischen Peerage gehörte, wie alle jakobitischen Titel jedoch nicht offiziell anerkannt wird.

1797 wurde der damalige Titelprätendent zum Lord Perth, Baron Drummond of Stobhall in der Peerage of Great Britain erhoben. Dieser Titel erlosch jedoch bereits drei Jahre später, als er ohne männlichen Abkömmling starb.

Der Anspruch auf den Titel ging nach seinem Tode auf den Duke of Melfort über. Dieser Titel, der 1692 ebenfalls in der jacobitischen Peerage geschaffen worden war, ruht seit dem Tode des vierzehnten Earls im Jahre 1902, da der Titelerbe den Anspruch darauf nicht nachgewiesen hatte. Dies gilt auch für die dem Dukedom nachgeordneten gleichzeitig geschaffenen jakobitischen Titel Marquess of Forth, Earl of Isla and Burtisland, Viscount of Rickerton und Lord Castlemains and Galston sowie die ebenfalls dieser Würde nachgeordneten Titel Viscount of Melfort und Lord Drummond of Gillestoun (geschaffen 1685) sowie Earl of Melfort, Viscount of Forth und Lord Drummond of Riccartoun, Castlemains and Gilstoun (geschaffen 1686), die allesamt zur Peerage of Scotland gehören.
