Januar 1980 Erscheinungsweise halbjährlich Herausgeber Andreas Müller-Pohle ISSN 0172-7028 European Photography (EP) ist eine Zeitschrift für internationale zeitgenössische künstlerische Fotografie und neue Medien. Sie erscheint seit 1980 und wird von dem deutschen Fotografen und Verleger Andreas Müller-Pohle herausgegeben. Seit 1993 gibt es zwei Ausgaben pro Jahr.
Geschichte
Von Beginn an widmete sie sich neben der Vorstellung aktueller fotografischer Positionen der Medientheorie, die vor allem in den 1980er Jahren, mit dem verstärkten Einzug der Fotografie in die Kunstmuseen, eine bedeutende Rolle spielte. Stark geprägt wurde die Zeitschrift in ihren Anfängen durch die Theorien des Medienphilosophen Vilém Flusser, der auch als Autor in der EP in Erscheinung trat.
Zunächst beschäftigte sich die EP mit junger europäischer Fotografie, stellte aber schon bald auch außereuropäische Positionen vor und widmete 1985 zwei Ausgaben (Heft 23 und 24) der australischen und nordamerikanischen Fotografie. „Wenn man so will, wandelte sich der Titel damals vom Buchstäblichen ins Metaphorische: Europa, das ist Transnationalismus, Pluralismus, Vielfalt.“[1]
Parallel zur Zeitschrift erschien bereits 1981 der mehrfach aktualisierte European Photo Galleries Guide, später in European Photography Guide umbenannt.
