Die Mitre Corporation (Eigenschreibweise: The MITRE Corporation) ist eine 1958 gegründete U.S.-amerikanische Denkfabrik mit Sitz in Bedford (Massachusetts) und McLean (Virginia). Die Mitre Corporation wird als Non-Profit-Organization geführt. [1] Gerüchten zufolge steht MITRE als Akronym für die Forschungsabteilung der renommierten Universität MIT in Cambridge: „Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Establishment“. Diese Vermutung basiert vor allem darauf, dass zur Gründung des Unternehmens mehrere hundert Mitarbeiter des MIT rekrutiert wurden.[2]

Sie betreibt im Auftragsverhältnis von der U.S.-Regierung finanzierte Forschungszentren (Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, FFRDCs). Diese gehören mehrheitlich zum Sicherheitsbereich (Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security), der Luftfahrt (Federal Aviation Administration, FAA), aber auch der Steuerverwaltung (Internal Revenue Service, IRS).

Mitre beschäftigte im Jahr 2008 7.006 Personen in weltweit 57 Zweigniederlassungen. Die Einkünfte beliefen sich auf 1.235.000.000 USD.[3]
