Abrin ist ein pflanzliches Toxin der Paternostererbse ( auch:Abrusbohne, Abrus precatorius) und zählt zu den tödlichsten Giften überhaupt. Abrin ist ein Sammelbegriff für die enthaltenen vier Isotoxine (Abrin A, B, C und D). Abrin A ist das wirksamste der vier Toxine. Es inhibiert die Proteinbiosynthese, indem ein Adenin (A4324) der 28S-rRNA abgespaltet.

Das Abrin stellt, wenn es gereinigt ist, ein bräunlich-gelbes Pulver dar. Es ist in Wasser löslich und bindet an Glykoproteine von Zellmembranen, ist also ein Lektin. Ca. 0,04 µg/kg Körpergewicht Abrin A reichen für eine tödliche Wirkung aus. Es stoppt die zelleigene Proteinsynthese.

In den Samen der Paternostererbsen sind 0,08% Abrin enthalten.

Vergiftungssymptome sind Durchfall, Erbrechen, Kolik, Tachykardie (Pulsbescheunigung) und Tremor (Schütteln). Der Tod tritt nach Tagen durch Nierenversagen, Herzversagen und/oder Atemlähmung ein.

Vergleich von Ricin (Blautöne) und Abrin (Rottöne). Die beiden Proteine weisen eine hohe Ähnlichkeit auf.

Ebenfalls als Abrin bezeichnet wird N-Methyl-L-tryptophan, das ebenfalls in der Paternostererbse enthalten ist.[1]
