Nita Melnikoff Lowey (* 5. Juli 1937 in New York City) ist eine US-amerikanische Politikerin der Demokratischen Partei und seit 1989 Mitglied des Repräsentantenhauses der Vereinigten Staaten für den Bundesstaat New York.

Biografie

Lowey wurde in der New Yorker Bronx geboren. Mit einem Bachelor schloss sie das Mount Holyoke College ab. Sie war als Regierungsmitarbeiterin tätig bevor sie ins US-Repräsentantenhaus gewählt wurde.

1988 wurde sie für den 20. Kongressdistrikt erstmals ins Repräsentantenhaus gewählt. Sie folgte auf Joseph J. DioGuardi gegen den sie sich durchsetzen konnte. Seit 1993 ist sie als Nachfolgerin von José Serrano, der seither den 16. Distrikt vertritt, die Vertreterin des 18. New Yorker Distrikts. Der Distrikt umfasst Teile des Westchester und des Rockland County. Sie konnte ihren Sitz bei allen nachfolgenden Wahlen verteidigen[1]. Lowey ist Mitglied im Committee on Appropriations.

Nita Lowey ist seit über 40 Jahren mit Stephen verheiratet. Beide haben 3 Kinder und 8 Enkelkinder. Sie leben in Harrison, Westchester County. Lowey ist jüdischen Glaubens.
