Norman Petty

Norman Petty (* 25. Mai 1927 in Clovis, New Mexico; † 15. August 1984 in Lubbock, Texas) war ein amerikanischer Musiker, Komponist und Pionier Produzent, in seinem Studio in Clovis entwickelte er neue Stile des Pop und Rock.

Leben

Er begann schon früh Klavier zu spielen und war oft im Lokalradio zu hören. Später heiratete er Vi Petty und gründete mit ihr und dem Gitarristen Jack Vaughn das Norman Petty Trio, ihre Version von Mood Indigo verkaufte sich 1956 über eine halbe Million mal, „Almost Paradise“ erreichte 1957 sogar Platz 18 der Charts. Ungefähr ab dieser Zeit begann er auch mit Buddy Holly Aufnahmen zu machen. Deren Erfolg machte ihn weltberühmt, so dass viele Musiker bei ihm Aufnahmen machen wollten. Vorteil bei ihm war das man das Studio nicht pro Stunde bezahlte, sondern pro Session, da Petty, selbst Musiker, der Meinung war das gute Aufnahmen auch Zeit brauchen, und es daran nicht scheitern sollte. Nach Holly's Tod machte er weiter Aufnahmen in seinem Studio die aber allesamt nicht sehr erfolgreich waren, 1969 schloss er das Studio, es kann heute noch besichtigt werden. Er starb 1984 an Leukämie.
