Proto ist ein minimalistischer Dateimanager für .NET. Er wird seit 2007 von Mieszko Lassota entwickelt.

Merkmale

Im Gegensatz zu so genannten orthodoxen Dateimanagern wie dem Norton Commander basiert die Bedienung von Proto auf den Ideen, die Jef Raskin in seinem Buch "The Humane Interface"[1] beschrieben hat.[2] Sie erfolgt vollständig über die Tastatur.

Standardmäßig zeigt Proto alle Dateien des aktuellen Verzeichnisses an. Über den blinkenden Cursor am unteren Bildschirmrand, der auch als Adresszeile dient (so wechselt Proto nach der Eingabe eines Pfades mit abschließendem \ automatisch in diesen) kann die aktuelle Anzeige eingeschränkt werden: Die Eingabe des Buchstaben P zum Beispiel blendet alle Dateien und Verzeichnisse aus, die kein P enthalten.

Funktionen

Neben den üblichen Dateioperationen wie Navigieren, Kopieren und Löschen stehen auch weitere Funktionen zur Verfügung; so kann Proto beliebig viele Ordnerfavoriten verwalten und bietet neben einem auf Scintilla basierenden Texteditor auch einen Taschenrechner und einen Editor für die Registrierungsdatenbank an. Zudem ist das Umbenennen von Dateien mittels regulärer Ausdrücke möglich.

Portierung auf andere Systeme

Eine Portierung von .NET auf Mono ist für die Version 1.0 geplant. Damit soll Proto auch nativ unter Linux und Mac OS X lauffähig werden.
