Beim Trifrons bzw. genauer: vultus trifrons (deutsch dreigestirntes Antlitz) handelt es sich um eine visuelle Darstellung von drei Gesichtern in einem, so dass sich diese drei Gesichter vier Augen teilen. Die Bedeutung dieser Darstellung ist in vielen Fällen unklar.

Vorkommnisse

In der Kunstgeschichte sind schon zahlreiche Beispiele bei den Kelten nachweisbar und immer noch erhalten[1], aber auch in romanischen und hochgotischen Kapitellen (meist an der Nordseite und in inferiorer Stellung, s. z. B. den pidou berlu in der Kirche Notre-Dame in Cluny, 13. Jh.) und in mittelalterlichen Fresken (z. B. in der Kirche San Nicola (Giornico), dort mit überaus klarer Bedeutung der christlichen Trinität, 15. Jh.; ein weiterer Trifrons mit der Bedeutung der Trinität ist auch im Verkündigungsfresko von 1400 in der Peterskirche in Basel erhalten).
