Clarence House ist die offizielle Residenz des britischen Thronfolgers Prince Charles und seiner Frau Camilla.

Daneben steht Clarence House metonymisch für das persönliche Büro bzw. den Pressesprecher des Prince of Wales.

Lage

Das Gebäude liegt in der City of Westminster im Westen Londons in der Straße The Mall unweit vom Buckingham Palace. Nachbargebäude ist der St. James's Palace.

Geschichte

1825–1828 wurde Clarence House durch John Nash erbaut. Das Gebäude hat vier Stockwerke und ist mit weißem Stuck verkleidet.

Alfred von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha nutzte das Gebäude.

Fast ein halbes Jahrhundert, von 1953 bis zu ihrem Tod 2002 war Clarence House die Residenz der Königinmutter. 2002/2003 wurde es für etwa 10 Mio. Euro renoviert.

Das Büro der Prinzen William und Harry wurde 2009 in den benachbarten St. James's Palace verlegt.

Touristisches

Seit 2003 kann das Gebäude jedes Jahr während der Sommerferien besichtigt werden. Die vorherige Reservierung von Karten ist notwendig.

Das Palais bietet wertvolle Seidentapeten sowie Gemälde von Thomas Gainsborough und Edgar Degas.
